From Scotland to Canada – Distance No Barrier’

This video depicts the successful piloting of new technology utilised in a care home environment to improve the lives of not only residents but also their family.

Angela Martin Manager at Whitfield Lodge Care Home in Lennoxtown near Glasgow introduces us to Whitfield and describes how as part of a collaborative intergenerational project with Scottish Care and East Dunbartonshire Voluntary Action, the home invited young students in from a local secondary school.

The students were able to suggest a number of ideas and technologies that the home could utilise to improve the everyday lives of their residents. One of these successful technologies employed was Skype, a social media  messenger service which allows users to communicate, in video or voice calls, across the internet for free. The technology was developed in Estonia in 2003 and is one of the most popular video / audio conferencing and communications technologies used today.
