Pocket Ideas is an activity tool which has been developed by the Activity Team in NHS Ayrshire & Arran, to promote meaningful conversations with older people. The booklet is small enough to fit in a uniform pocket and so makes the tool very portable to use. It is filled with ready to go ideas to stimulate meaningful conversations and includes 5 sections; communication, games, music and culture, physical activity and wellbeing. Throughout the booklet there are many illustrations and inspirational quotes too. It has been used in a variety of ways for example; in-patient settings, community settings, befriending services, volunteers, carers, memory cafes and in care homes. Overall the feedback has highlighted that it is easy to use and many conversations have been enjoyed. Pocket Ideas won ‘Best Acute Care Initiative’ at the Scottish Dementia Awards in 2014, and ‘light bulb moments - creativity and innovation’ at Ayrshire Achieves in 2015. In 2017, Pocket Ideas was launched nationally across Scotland for every health board and many other organisations e.g. Care Inspectorate, Alzheimer Scotland and SSSC. It’s been an incredible journey and it’s hope that Pocket Ideas will continue to support and encourage many meaningful conversations for older people.
