Argyll & Bute

Each care home in Argyll & Bute has access to a link District Nurse who advises on palliative care and provides some basic teaching sessions if required, similarly the care at home providers would access support from their local District Nurse.

The Lead Nurse and Marie Curie Lead are regularly invited to the Argyll & Bute Care Home Network meeting to update providers on palliative care and related issues.

The Health & Social Care Partnership Chaplain recently attended the same meeting and offered to work with staff in care homes to give them an opportunity to reflect independently on their own needs in caring for people in the palliative stages.  All the care homes are well aware of who their link District Nurse is and access them regularly for a number of issues.

Highland

ECHO is a tele-mentoring project using ZOOM video and web-conferencing technology. Highland Hospice is currently running a cohort with care homes in the Highlands including Abbeyfield Ballachulish.

Highland Hospice will be running a study day in October bringing together practitioners from across the region delivering PEOLC.  This is a pilot event but it is already fully subscribed and they expect to offer it annually.  They are also running a series of seven palliative and end of life care courses for care home staff across the Highlands in 2017-2018.

As well as offering opportunities for care home staff to shadow Hospice staff when requested, Highland Hospice are keen to progress the concept of two-way exchanges.  They also offer a 24/7 advice service for all health professionals in palliative and end of life care.  For further information, please call 01463 242758

Unfortunately, the demand for the services that the Hospice has in place far outstrips their resources which would suggest there is a thirst for this knowledge.  The geography of the Highlands makes the provision of training problematic and costly.
