News: INFORMATION ON SSSC REGISTRATION FOR NEW SUPPORT WORKERS IN CARE HOME SERVICES FOR ADULTS

17th February 2014

There has recently been some confusion about how long a worker, newly registered with the SSSC, has before completing the relevant qualification for their category.

This has arisen due to the recent announcement from the SSSC that anyone commencing employment for the first time as a social service worker from 1 August 2013, in a group for whom the SSSC Register is currently open, will have to apply to register as soon as possible and must achieve registration within the first six months of starting their job. The specific category at issue here is the Support Worker in a care home service for adults.

From the point of SSSC registration of any worker, including the Support Worker, the person has a condition placed on their registration if they do not have a relevant qualification for the category at that time.

The worker then normally has the first period of registration in which to gain this qualification – for the Support Worker this first period of registration is now FIVE YEARS.  They do have to pay an annual fee to the SSSC but this is not what is meant by the first period of registration.

When the period granted to the worker to gain the qualification expires, the SSSC will write to ask the worker to provide evidence of the qualification.
